- Search just the surname, location, and broad date range between last known ancestor and first found surname. to find
Census records are your best friend.

For England ancestors, the Domesday Book is where it’s happening.
note: This is not a UK thing; it won’t work for Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and. of course, The Republic of Ireland.
